Proverbs 18:21 Power of the Tongue: Words Shape Your Future
Nov 06, 2026
You may think your words only describe the life you already have. That is a comfortable assumption, but it ignores what Scripture says. Your mouth gives voice to what is in your heart, and that fruit reaches into your future.
Faith takes God at His word before you see the result
Faith does not wait for visible proof before it believes God. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NKJV). If you require your circumstances to improve before you trust God, what are you calling faith?
God’s creation shows that the visible world is not the whole story. “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God” (Hebrews 11:3, NKJV). What you can see came from what you could not see. Water became wine, and bread and fish multiplied. These examples show the unseen becoming visible through the word of God. Your eyes measure what is already in front of you; faith also takes account of what God has said.
God “calls those things which do not exist as though they did” (Romans 4:17, NKJV). He spoke, and creation came into view. His word still holds what He made: “For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast” (Psalm 33:9, NKJV). Faith rests on what God has said when the result is not yet in front of you.
That matters when your health, work, relationships, or resources look different from what you are believing God for. The visible situation is real, but it is not the only reality. Will you let what you see decide what you believe, or will you trust God’s word while you wait to see its fruit?
Your words reveal the treasure in your heart
Your mouth gives voice to your inner life. Jesus said, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34, NKJV). The words that come out under pressure expose what you have been storing up. Bitterness, anger, and unbelief speak. So do love, mercy, grace, and faith.
The heart holds what you believe about God, yourself, and the circumstances around you. Those beliefs shape what you say. If you believe God is against you, that you are unworthy, and that your situation cannot change, those conclusions will find their way into your speech. If you believe God loves you and His word is true, that conviction can shape your words too.
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things” (Matthew 12:35, NKJV). The circumstances in front of you, even mountains, do not have the final word. Good treasure in the heart comes out as words that bring forth good things. What is happening now does not have to supply your final word.
Words spoken over you can also take root when you choose to believe them. A cruel sentence from childhood may still sound like a verdict: you will never amount to anything. But the words that govern your life are the ones you receive as true. Whose words have you been letting shape your view of yourself? The Word of God gives you something sounder to believe.
The tongue produces fruit for life or death
Your words carry consequences. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21, NKJV). Your speech can feed a vision or help bury it. It can build hope in a marriage or keep announcing that the relationship is beyond help. It can give voice to faith about your work and needs, or keep rehearsing failure as if it is already settled.
The repeated lines you use about yourself deserve attention: “Nothing ever goes my way.” “Nobody believes in me.” “I never get a raise.” Those words do more than report a difficult season. They plant the expectation that nothing will change. A complaint repeated until it sounds permanent becomes the soil you are tending. Is that the fruit you want to eat?
Proverbs says, “A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth” (Proverbs 12:14, NKJV). It also says, “A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth; From the produce of his lips he shall be filled” (Proverbs 18:20, NKJV). Your words matter in ordinary needs, including work and provision. If you are between jobs, you can still speak your way into having what you need to live when your faith is in God. Words can open doors even when no one else hears them.
This applies to what you expect for your health, too. Faith looks to God before the body feels better. It is confidence in what God has said while the evidence is still unseen. Do not let fear become the only voice in your mouth. The same principle applies when you are waiting for a relationship to improve or for work and resources to come: your faith has an object before your circumstances change.
The examples can be concrete. You can see yourself becoming more diligent, growing in character, doing good work, and seeing a relationship improve. You can expect favor and goodness from God. What you see by faith is what your words bring forth. When you say, “I hate my boss” or “Nothing ever goes my way,” you are also showing what is filling your heart. What picture of tomorrow are your words building today?
Fill your heart with the Word you want to speak
God’s word accomplishes what He sends it to do. “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11, NKJV). His words carry His purpose. The question is whether your heart is filled with His word or with a jumble of fear, doubt, and resignation.
“Whatever will be will be” and “God never blesses me” are not faith. They leave you expecting confusion and loss. What are you feeding your heart each day? If you keep dwelling on every setback, those are the words you will reach for when pressure rises. Put God’s promises in your heart so your mouth has something better to bring forth.
You can expect a better job, growing character, a restored relationship, and good fruit because your confidence is in God. Speak from what God has promised, not from what the problem predicts. What fills your heart will eventually find its way to your lips, and those words bring forth fruit.
Make a decision about the next words you speak. Will they repeat fear, or will they come from faith in God’s Word? Let only words of life come from your mouth.
